Seperti sudah diduga sebelumnya, The Artist keluar sebagai Best Picture dalam malam penganugerahan Oscar 2012 yang baru saja usai. Bersama Hugo, film bisu yang menuai banyak pujian itu sekaligus menjadi film peraih piala Oscar terbanyak, yaitu lima penghargaan.
Sementara itu, Meryl Streep dinobatkan sebagai Best Actress berkat kekuatan aktingnya sebagai Margareth Thatcher dalam film The Iron Lady. Menerima Oscar dari Colin Firth, Streep mengalahkan para kontendernya seperti Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Viola Davis (The Help), dan Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn).
Sedangkan untuk penghargaan Best Actor diserahkan kepada Jean Dujardin berkat perannya yang dipuja-puji sebagai George Valentin dalam The Artist. Piala tersebut diserahkan oleh Natalie Portman kepada Dujardin yang sukses mengalahkan nominator lain seperti Gary Oldman (Tinker, Taulor, Soldier, Spy), Brad Pitt (Moneyball) dan George Clooney (The Descendants). Dujardin menjadi aktor asal Prancis pertama yang memenangkan Piala Oscar sebagai Best Actor.
The Artist juga mengantarkan Michel Hazanavicius meraih penghargaan Best Director, sekaligus mengalahkan rival-rival beratnya seperti Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris). Terrence Malilck (The Tree of Life), Alexander Payne (The Descendants), dan Martin Scorsese (Hugo).
Para pemenang lain: Rango (Best Animated Feature), A Separation (Best Foreign Language Film), Midnight in Paris (Best Original Screenplay) dan The Descendants (Adapted Screenplay). Octavia Spencer dan Christopher Plummer pun kebagian piala emas itu sebagai Best Supporting Actree dan Best Supporting Actor.
Malam penyerahan Oscar tahun ini diadakan di Kodak Theatre di Hollywood & Highland Center dengan Billy Crystal sebagai pembawa acara. Acara tersebut menampilkan pertunjukan khusus dari Cirque du Soleil, yang menampilkan acara bertema Iris. Para pemberi penghargaan berupa nama-nama aktor papan atas, seperti Robert Downey Jr., Angelina Jolie, Michael Douglas, Tina Fey, Sandra Bullock, Tom Cruise, dan masih banyak lagi.
